  • Despite some lingering issues…

It looks like the server move was a good idea. At some point this morning my home server lost connectivity. Actually, I can’t talk to either of my home servers, which indicates any combination of:

  • Power failure
  • Network failure related to Comcast
  • DHCP change (also related to Comcast
  • Internal network failure, such as my cable modem or router going kaput
  • But the blog is still up! YAY!

Now, if I can only find the time to chase down my email problem….

  • New Smartphones

So… I’ve been using a Samsung Captivate for a couple years now.  It’s the only Android phone that I’ve used to this point (my previous 2 phones were Windows Mobile), and I’ve been pretty happy with it.  Especially once I dropped CyonogenMod 7 on it so I could actually use a bluetooth headset properly with it.  I’m currently running CryogenMod 9 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Like I said, I’ve had this phone for a couple years, so it looks like it’s time for an upgrade.  So far, the two that I’m looking at are the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy III (which may be out early May).  The specs of these phone blow my mind.  Both have the Tegra3 quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, at least 16GB of storage space, and apparently a separate GPU.  Pretty sure my netbook that I still use has lesser specs.

Oh, and when I bought the Captive 2 years ago, I thought it was freaking huge.  Most smart phones on the market today are even bigger.  A few by a good bit.

  • The email. It is broken

I screwed up something with the DNS transfer, so oddball and I aren’t getting any mail. We can send, but cant receive.

I’ll fix it as soon as I can, but we get a low volume of mail. 😀

EDIT: We can get email now, but for some reason comment notifications aren’t coming through. Not even as spam.

The reason why email got borked is because I changed nameservers when I moved to the hosting provider. Like an idiot, I didn’t think through the consequences of that. I had to move back to the old nameservers because my hosting provider won’t allow me to set MX records. Unless, of course, I pay for email hosting from them.

  • To-done list

    Up at 0430. On purpose.

    Ran a 5k. Mostly.

Went to the gun show. Surprisingly few guns. The only thing I came home with was for the dog.

Moved blog from a self hosted solution to a hosting provider. I was already paying for the space and didn’t want to have downtime again.

    Dinner with the wife’s family.

Possibly found her a new vehicle.

Played with the dog until she decided to start tearing up the house.

    Feeding lilwizard before bed.

    Not a bad Saturday.

  • Fricken Laser Beams!

A bit back, my friends at the Hacker Consortium got themselves a laser engraver/cutter similar to this one.

So I did what any rational person would do. I took several magazines to get the GCT Logo engraved on them!

I did one M&P15-22 mag, a Glock Fun Stick, and a seriously used aluminium AR mag. Results were kind of “meh” because my expectations were high. Still pretty cool, though!

  • EDC Flashlight review: Fenix PD20

A few weeks ago I had a bleg about everyday carry flashlights. I got some really good suggestions, and I highly recommend heading over to that post and reading the comments. The two top I considered ended up being the Fenix PD20 and the 4Sevens Quark MiniX 123. I ultimately went with the PD20 after a friend let me play with his 4Sevens pen light. I didn’t like that the tailcap switch seemed like a capacitive button. I didn’t really feel like I would be able to operate it properly in a high-stress situation.

Remember, one of the reasons I wanted the light was to be able to use it in conjunction with my pocket-carry PF9.

  • Two Out of Three

I recently got an email from the developer of a new iPhone app asking if I would review it. I can’t really do that with an Android phone, so he offered to send me a press release instead.

Nice guy, one-man shop, and hits two of the three topics I cover? DEAL!

Introducing A New Gun App For iOS Devices
    JHS Tech LLC
Gun Inventory is an app developed for iOS devices by gun lovers for gun lovers. It is the easiest way to keep track of your firearms in case of loss, theft, or any other situations in which you would need the serial numbers, pictures, or calibers of every firearm you own.

The app is designed to be very easy to use by just filling in information such as Finish, Barrel Length, Make, Model, Serial Number, and any other information you feel necessary in identifying your firearms. After the information is saved, your guns are organized into a easily navigated list that will always be with you.
Why use an app when you can just write it down?
This is a question the developers were asking when creating the app and they think they have found the solution. This app eliminates any situations where you will be without that information such as fires where not only your firearms are destroyed but also your list of guns. If you do want a hard copy of your list, you can email it to yourself with just the push of a button.
    What about security?
The app has an optional password protected login screen and is integrated into the remote wiping features that come on all iOS devices.

If you are a gun lover looking for the next big thing to track your firearms, you have found it with Gun Inventory.

  • The perfect flash drive for Linux

Due to some of the comments on the last post about my disaster thumb drive, I figure this would be relevant to your interests.  I present to you what I think is the perfect thumb drive to use as a Linux install/run from flash drive:

    4GB penguin drive

And yes, that is what I’m currently using at home for installs or if I need to work on a machine that won’t boot to its native OS.

  • Thumb drives for disaster preparedness

Tam and Uncle both mentioned someone raising the idea of including electronics in you bug out kit.  Me being me, I figured I’d throw in my two cents.  Especially since, while I wasn’t one of those hit by the little bit of rain here in Nashville last year, I did have to quickly evacuate in the middle of the night a few years ago due to an apartment fire that took out my entire building.  I was fortunate enough to escape with my wallet, car keys, and money, but that was largely because they were still in the pants next to my bed.  A few of the other folks weren’t as lucky and had a bit harder time dealing with the rescue workers (and I’m assuming everyone else) when they were asked for identification.

I would highly encourage everyone to carry a USB thumb drive with scans of important documents on it.  I will say that you don’t have to buy a high capacity one or one that’s been “ruggedized.”  I’ve been carrying a 1GB Sandisk MicroCruiser that I bought back when that was the high capacity size.  It’s been riding on my key chain ever since and has taken a pretty good beating because of it.  I check it periodically to make sure it still works, and so far, so good.

Here’s what I have on mine and would recommend having on yours: a folder encrypted using TrueCrypt that contains scans of my birth certificate, SS card, driver’s license, and other important documents or information (some include a text file with bank account info, etc), a portable copy of TrueCrypt  to access the folder, and portable copies of OpenOffice and Foxit (PDF viewer) from portableapps.com.  As long as I have access to a computer running Windows with an open USB drive, I’m good to go.

Oh, and notice I said “have on me,” not “ready to go” or “in my bug out bag.”  I learned in the fire, that I only had time to grab a couple things (including pants and shoes) before I had to get out due to smoke.  I failed to find my cellphone because my girlfriend moved it a foot from where I had put it when I went to bed.
