  • Thinking of getting a new Android device?

Wait. Just a little bit. That’s the advice I recently gave my brother-in-law and his wife. Both of them are rocking OG Droids and are looking to upgrade. They said that one of them could upgrade today, and the other could upgrade in January.

All indications are that the next version of Android–called Ice Cream Sandwich–will be coming out in about a month. By the start of the Christmas shopping season, phones and tablets will start shipping with ICS.

If you buy one now, it could be a year or more before you get the update (*cough*Samsung*cough). Even when you do get the update, your old phone may still have some features that will make using the new version confusing (like hardware buttons for back, home, menu, and search–all of which will be rendered obsolete).

So be patient. Buying a phone today is a lot like buying a computer 10 years ago–by the time you buy it, it’s already obsolete. Wait as long as you can and buy the most phone you can afford at the time. My Nexus One was the fastest phone in the world when it came out, and it’s already showing it’s age 18 months after it was introduced (NFC? Dual Core? Front facing camera? What are these new-fangled things!). While I would love to go out and buy a new Samsung Galaxy S II phone, I am waiting for the next Nexus phone.

  • Revue Review

A few weeks ago I bought a Logitech Revue when the price dropped from $299 to $99.

Here are my thoughts on it after two weeks:

    Meh.

We don’t really watch a lot of live television, so a box that is most useful when you’re watching live TV doesn’t have a lot of value to us. I have used XBMC as my home media player since it’s inception back in 2003-ish. Originally I used original XBOX’s, but now I have a quad-core desktop running the package in the living room.

XBMC basically does everything the Revue does except allow me to watch live TV. Most things are done better with XBMC, like the Youtube link that really just opens the web page in Chrome.

At $99 I’m not upset at the purchase. Eventually it’ll end up replacing the aging XBOX in the bedroom. At $299 I would’ve been upset.

At the $99 price point it’s really competing with something like a Roku. At $299, it’s competing with HTPCs like this one.

As of this post, Google TV still doesn’t have the Android Market nor any easy way to install third party apps. I think when that happens (supposedly with the update to Honeycomb, which was supposed to happen in August of 2011. It’s now September) the device will be a lot more valuable. Until then, I’ll stick with my XBMC.

  • RSS Feed for Amazon’s Free App of the Day

As you know, I have an Android Phone, and I love it. Amazon has their own App Store, and every day they offer a paid app for free.

The problem is, you need to open the Amazon App Store every day to find out what the free app is. This is not something I am likely to do, so I started to wonder if there was an RSS feed for the free apps. Google Reader is something I open every day.

Nightwalker over at GeekExile.com had the same problem, so he created his own RSS feed for the free apps.

  • Notes from the weekend

“Gone With the Wind” is a really, really long movie. I’d never seen it before and decided to remedy that. It took pretty much all day Saturday when you include the breaks we had to take for eating and letting the dog out. I now understand why he didn’t give a damn. I wouldn’t either.

Lowe’s and Home Depot will sell you primed interior doors, but not painted interior doors. This seems foolish to me. They also come with the hole for the doorknob cut, but you have to make the cuts for the hinges yourself. This is a PITA.

In related news, my office now has an unpainted (but primed) door with some really rough hinge cutouts. Previously there was just a door frame.

Taking Casey on two 2 mile walks, shopping at Lowe’s and Home Depot, and going to the grocery store in one day is a bad idea for someone who generally walks only 3 miles a day in total. Getting old sucks. I can barely walk today.

A friend of the wife went shooting for the first time on Friday. She and her husband went on a double date to an indoor pistol range where she shot his Glock 19. Her previous level of interest in guns was “He should leave a Post-It note on the shotgun with instructions on how to use it in case someone breaks in and I’m home alone. Otherwise, I don’t ever want to touch it.” Husband is new-ish to guns, brand new to handguns, and wants to get his carry permit. Based on the smiles in the pictures they sent us, she’s all-in now.

The Logitech Revue Review will be forthcoming, but here are my initial thoughts: Can’t really say it’s better than my Home Theater PC running XBMC, but for $99 shipped from Amazon it’s pretty awesome. Eventually this will move to the bedroom when we buy a new TV for up there.

I saw a really strange (and by that I mean totally awesome) recumbent motortrike. It looked like a custom-made machine. Chopper front end, V8 powerplant on the back, and the seat was maybe 4″ from the ground. Casey was in the car with me and she barked at the guy the whole time he was behind us.

  • Apple announces end of Apple

Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO. He will stay on as an employee, but I don’t imagine that will last very long.

The last time he left, Apple nearly went under. It was saved when he came back. Given the health issues he’s had, I doubt that will happen this time.
