  • On being debt free

I’ve been doing the Dave Ramsey Thing for almost 7 years now. I became debt free in 2007. A year later, I paid cash for my wedding and honeymoon and by 2010 we had paid off Mrs wizardpc’s credit cards and student loans, and had also purchased a house with a 20% down payment. We have been debt free except the house since October of 2010. We’ve had 6 months of expenses in the bank since this past spring. We were about to start paying off the house early the day we found out lilwizard would be joining us.

At every point in my journey, there have been people who have said “Well, that’s great in theory, but just wait until X! You’ll have to borrow money then!”

So far, the values for X have been:

    • When you get a girlfriend.
    • When you get engaged.
    • When you get married.
    • When you get a house.*
    • When you have kids.

And I have a few ideas about what the next ones will be. At every point, I’ve just trucked along without any problems.

I’ve done this single. I’ve done this while trying to convince a girl I was worth marrying. I’ve done this while keeping the wife happy and increasing her standard of living. I’ve done this as a renter. I’ve done it as a homeowner. I’m about to do it as a parent.

No matter where you are in your life, you can do this. Just like quitting smoking, though, quitting debt is hard. You have to want it.

I want $17,000,000 at retirement more than I want a new $35,000 truck instead of a $2,700 Cherokee. I want to be able to buy my kids houses as wedding presents more than I want to live in a $400,000 house 5 minutes from work. I want my wife to be able to be a stay at home mom if she wants to more than I want all the cable channels.

    Life is about trade-offs.

*Yes, I got a mortgage, but that’s not what I’m referring to. People kept telling me I’d need to build my credit. We bought a house, but I got a mortgage. With a 15 year fixed rate conventional mortgage and 20% down, I was able to get a 4.375% mortgage during a time where 4.5-5.25% mortgages were the norm, despite not having any consumer debt since 2005 or any debt at all since 2007. I didn’t have to go out and “build my credit” like so many people told me I was going to have to do. The wife had a much more recent credit history but adding her to the mortgage would have negatively affected our rate. Think about that. ETA: mrswizardpc reminded me last night (and in comments today) that the problems we had adding her to the mortgage were related to her just having graduated college and therefor having less than a year of professional work history.

  • Mal’s gun

That’s immediately what I thought of when I saw this.

Coil gun revolver? Somebody tell Linoge.

  • Robbery video with audio

A local Smoothie King was robbed this week and the owners have posted the surveillance video–including audio–to YouTube:
    [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6NxolSOexk&w=420&h=345]

The owners say that while still frames are nice, the audio is more likely to identify him. I’ll agree with that.

Watching the video, I don’t think the guy is actually armed. He appears to be wearing sweatpants and just ask Plaxico how well sweatpants work for Mexican Carry. When he walks in, he appears to have his right hand on the gun, in front and over his shirt. Later, he looks like he’s reaching behind him to get a gun, with his left hand. He might have an airsoft pistol just in case the employees needed a little more convincing, but I don’t think he had anything. It doesn’t take much to scare teenage girls.

He also appears to be pretty new at this. He begins by announcing the robbery as he enters the store. He allows one of the employees to briefly retreat to an office. He uses both hands to give the employees the plastic shopping bag he brought with him. He turns his back on them once he’s got the money. UPDATE: Not his first rodeo.

Oh, and to the employees: It’s probably not a good idea to tell a robber “I’m not authorized to do that” when he tells you to open the register.

  • Movie Review: Source Code

It was actually pretty good. It isn’t “OMG you need to go buy this today” good, but it is “add it to your Netflix queue” good. They had ample opportunity for politicization, but thankfully they didn’t take it.

My only problem was with the name. “Source Code” is an actual term used to describe something pretty common, so you shouldn’t use it as a term for something completely unrelated.

  • Ridiculous law of the week

I might make this a feature. Not sure. In my research over the years I have come across some mighty stupid laws.

I came across this one when researching leash laws. It’s a Class C Misdemeanor.

    Tenn. Code Ann. § 55-8-179:

No person, unless totally or partially deaf, shall carry, hold, or use on any street, highway, or in any other public place, a leash blaze orange in color on any dog accompanying that person.

This one is stupid mostly because it’s completely unknown to regular people. Heck, my wife works with the deaf and didn’t know about this. This leash is probably illegal, and I’m given to understand that there are a lot of people in this state who are UT fans.

Really, what’s the point here? To alert drivers that there might be a hearing dog on the sidewalk? And why would that be useful information? It’s not like you’d have time to process “oh, that leash is blaze orange” before actually passing the deaf owner.

  • Clearly, we need ball bearing control

Not exactly something you could sneak around with, but I sure wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of this!

  • Notes from the weekend

“Gone With the Wind” is a really, really long movie. I’d never seen it before and decided to remedy that. It took pretty much all day Saturday when you include the breaks we had to take for eating and letting the dog out. I now understand why he didn’t give a damn. I wouldn’t either.

Lowe’s and Home Depot will sell you primed interior doors, but not painted interior doors. This seems foolish to me. They also come with the hole for the doorknob cut, but you have to make the cuts for the hinges yourself. This is a PITA.

In related news, my office now has an unpainted (but primed) door with some really rough hinge cutouts. Previously there was just a door frame.

Taking Casey on two 2 mile walks, shopping at Lowe’s and Home Depot, and going to the grocery store in one day is a bad idea for someone who generally walks only 3 miles a day in total. Getting old sucks. I can barely walk today.

A friend of the wife went shooting for the first time on Friday. She and her husband went on a double date to an indoor pistol range where she shot his Glock 19. Her previous level of interest in guns was “He should leave a Post-It note on the shotgun with instructions on how to use it in case someone breaks in and I’m home alone. Otherwise, I don’t ever want to touch it.” Husband is new-ish to guns, brand new to handguns, and wants to get his carry permit. Based on the smiles in the pictures they sent us, she’s all-in now.

The Logitech Revue Review will be forthcoming, but here are my initial thoughts: Can’t really say it’s better than my Home Theater PC running XBMC, but for $99 shipped from Amazon it’s pretty awesome. Eventually this will move to the bedroom when we buy a new TV for up there.

I saw a really strange (and by that I mean totally awesome) recumbent motortrike. It looked like a custom-made machine. Chopper front end, V8 powerplant on the back, and the seat was maybe 4″ from the ground. Casey was in the car with me and she barked at the guy the whole time he was behind us.
