  • Conversation with an Apple Fanboy

Yesterday there was some conference or something. Guy that sits next to me spent most of the morning reading Engadget and watching some presentation by that guy that’s not Steve Jobs.

Him: OMG! The new versions of iOS and OSX will allow you to answer phone calls on your computer!!!

    Me: Oh, like Google Voice?

Him, somewhat indignantly/sarcastically: You mean if I call your cell phone, your computer will ring?

    Me: Yes.

Look, I’m sure that iProducts are nice and all, it’s just that Apple doesn’t innovate fast enough for me.

If you’re going to limit your password field to 12 characters on your login page, you should probably also limit your password field to 12 characters on your registration page.

Related: As a general rule, if you’re going to have criteria for passwords, it’s probably best to let the user know that.

That way you don’t have someone who uses a password manager–like me–input a random 16 character password during registration, only to immediately have to use the “reset my password” feature because I can only put 12 of my 16 characters in the box.

  • A lot has happened

I went almost a month between my last two posts. Hopefully that won’t happen again (although I’m two sentences in to this and have already had to stop a half dozen times to deal with either the tactical dog or lilwizard, or both).

Mostly I’ve been chasing down a problem at work that had a June 1st deadline for resolution or it’ll cost us several million dollars. I love you guys, but you don’t buy my groceries.

I sold the WRX and bought this:

    IMG_4255

For those of you keeping score at home, that’s my third Cherokee, not counting the three my dad had when I was growing up. I pretty much started looking for one again about the time the guy who bought my last one rounded to corner out of sight. At the time, I needed the extra money more than I needed a third vehicle, especially since my daily driver was a 4×4 Excursion.

I’d been hardcore looking for one for about 8 months. I really wanted one withe the NP242 (Selec-Trac) transfer case, but about six months in to my search I had seen exactly one for sale within a hundred miles of here, and it sold before I could get to the guy and buy it. It was a 92 XJ Wagoneer, for those who know what that is. So I resigned myself to buying one with the NP231 and doing a swap.

Well I finally got tired of being treated like a 17 year old while driving the WRX so I put it up on craigslist. Basically, within 90 seconds I had two soccer moms SCREAMING at me for going too fast–first in a parking lot where I was backing out of a parking spot and then again while sitting at a stoplight not moving at all. So I started remembering all the times where the crossing guard on my way to work would wave for me to slow down when I was 30 ft from the guy in front of me and all the times I’d been pushed into oncoming traffic by merging minivans who either didn’t see me or didn’t care.

It sold in about a week.

On Sunday a couple came and looked at it. Sunday night they let me know they’d be coming by Monday evening to pay me and pick it up. Monday morning on my way to work I said to myself, “Self, if you see that Cherokee you’ve been admiring for the last year today, and you can turn around and follow the guy to his office, you should see if he’ll sell it to you.”

    So that happened.

The previous owner had done just about everything I would have wanted to do to any XJ that I picked up, and hadn’t done any mods that I would not have done. The only thing wrong with it was a bad driver window regulator and some flaky wiring (ON A JEEP? YOU’RE KIDDING!) in the rear hatch, both of which I fixed on the first weekend. It does have the 231 so I want to do a swap but I need to wait until I get another vehicle to do that. See, doing that with 3″ of lift may cost a mere $200 for just the transfer case, or it may cost upwards of $2000 for the case, axle shims, and a new driveshaft with a slip yoke eliminator. You don’t know which it’ll be until you replace the transfer case and then get it on the interstate. If there are vibrations, you have to send off the output shaft to get it machined. So that’s going to wait a little bit.

Next week I’m picking up these bumpers locally.

Also, I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now and even though I really liked the way the rims and tires looked on it, I may replace them with Cragar Soft D‘s and some BridgeStone Dueller’s. We’ll see.

  • Dumb criminal of the day

We often see failures in the victim selection process, but this one really takes the cake.

You see, our intrepid young entrepreneur decided to get some capital for his new street corner pharmacy by using an online ad to lure unsuspecting citizens into a robbery.

Now normally this would be a pretty good business plan. Every week I see stories where someone shows up with $3,000 cash to buy a two year old SUV with 14,000 miles on it, only to be robbed of the money when they get there. Likewise, smartphones are stolen on a fairly regular basis when the seller hands the phone to the prospective buyer while the buyer is sitting in his car with the engine running and the car in gear.

This genius decided to rob people selling…guns:

A teenager was arrested Wednesday night in connection to two gun-sales related robberies this week.

Jeffery Duncan III, 18, allegedly committed both robberies in the 1300 block of Quail Valley Road, not far from the Elm Hill Marina.

The victims told police they posted handguns for sale online and were contacted by a potential buyer to meet at specific addresses on the road.

Police said the first robbery occurred Sunday afternoon when the victim arrived at the predetermined location where Duncan allegedly robbed him of two firearms at gunpoint.

After the first one went well, he decided that he had a viable business opportunity here. The second one didn’t go so well:

The second robbery occurred Monday afternoon when the victim fired one shot in self-defense and Duncan reportedly returned fire.

The victim was not struck. Duncan drove himself to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound, was treated and released.

Authorities stated Duncan admitted to partaking in both robberies.

I mean, really. Out of all the people to rob, you chose people you know, for a fact, are armed? I get that there are some people who might just have the one handgun, or don’t have carry permits, but seriously?

One of the stolen guns was recovered inside his Quail Valley Road residence.

    I give up.

  • About that mystery helicopter in the Bundy Cattle Confiscation…

David Codrea had an article in The Examiner over the weekend about the FAA issuing what’s called a TFR for the Gold Butte area. A TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) is basically a domestic no fly zone, and are usually limited to things like disaster zones, Presidential/Vice Presidential visits, and rocketry. I don’t know of another law enforcement action that needed a TFR but I could be wrong.

In his article, he mentions this picture from the Las Vegas Review Journal (no link because copyright trolls), and how that tail number is not in the FAA Registry.

He’s right. You can look it up yourself if you’d like. There is no aircraft registered as N806IJ.

Now, there’s this other thing that the FAA allows you to do. You can download the entire FAA Registration Database as a zip file of CSVs. It takes a little bit of translation, but what if you open that guy up you can see that there are about 1500 Robinson R44s registered.

My coblogger oddball said “That 8 is obviously a painted 2” so I narrowed down to R44s that started with a 2, and guess what I found?

N206TJ, registered to Rugged Country Helicopters, LLC, based in Cedar City, UT.

Cedar City, UT, is about 150 miles from the Bundy Ranch. The range of an R44 is 350 miles without refueling.

    So, there’s that.

They don’t have a web presence that I can find, but I’m sure someone with more time could call them and ask them if that’s their bird.

  • New Jeep!

Ever since I sold my last one, I’ve regretted it. I’ve owned two cherokees (a 93 police package and a 99) and loved them both dearly. They both developed electrical problems and due to time, money, and storage limits they had to go.

For about 6 months I’ve been looking for another one. Jeep stopped making the Cherokee in 2001, so what’s out there generally has about 180,000 to 230,000 miles. I’ve been looking for another 99 due get the best mix of parts interchangeability and reliability, and about three weeks ago decided that if I really wanted an NP242 transfer case, I was just going to have to buy one with the NP231 and swap a 242 in.

That made it really easy to find one in the price range I was looking at:

  • Gun Porn: M99s!

After the ARFCOM shoot last month, I’ve almost got myself convinced that I should buy one of these:

And that wasn’t the only one there:

BTW, when I shot it, I ended up with a mouth full of kicked up grass. And a huge smile.

Go check out this thread at ARFCOM for more, including what .50 will do to 1.25″ steel plates.

    smya x1 in a tree

Yeah, I probably had two minutes of flight before getting it stuck in the tree. The first time. Happened two more times after that before the battery died. Luckily I was smart enough to not get enough altitude that retrieving it would require more than a stick.

  • Long overdue ARFCOM HTF shoot AAR

On 3/22/14, James (he of Bidet Shoot Fame) and I went to the AR-15.com Tennessee Hometown Forum Spring Shoot put on by Precision Multigun in Cookeville, TN.

It was fantastic, problems with my new Remington 700 notwithstanding.

There are actually several ranges on the property. The first one we went to had a 230 yard position and an 1100-ish yard position. We didn’t stick around long enough to go out to 1100 yards there, but here are some pics from the 230:

Next we were off to “Massa” which was more geared towards precision. The “warm up” target was I believe an 8″ plate at 344 yards. There were several dozen steel targets at various ranges out to (and past?) 900. Most of them could not be seen with the naked eye.

James and I got brave enough out to one of the 650’s. I think we took a couple of 700 yard shots but weren’t connecting.

Fun times. There was a lot of serious gear out there. I look forward to the next one.

  • Gun Porn: Slidefire and EOTech Epic Fail

Alternate title: Why you need BUIS 😀

This rifle was one of the ones at the ARFCOM TN shoot.

    IMG_4134

Pretty, ain’t she? Slidefire, Magpul MVG, Magpul MOE Handguard. Beautiful.

    But there’s a problem.

    IMG_4136

    IMG_4135

The EOTech (either an XPS2 or an XPS3, I can’t tell) had it’s lower piece of glass just kind of banging around inside the housing.

That’s a bad day. I think the same gentleman also had a BCG lock up inside a rifle. Really, really bad day.

The very first time I ever went shooting with Oleg, two very embarrassing things happened.

    1. I was the reason we had to wear hearing protection, because I was the only one without suppressors
    2. The alkaline batteries in my EOTech 512 had blown up and corroded the battery compartment, rendering it useless

I also didn’t have backup irons on that rifle. I pretty quickly was able to repair the EOTech (replacement parts are cheap) and within a couple of weeks had put on an MBUS rear sight and a YHM Front Sight.

There is an argument to be made about not putting backup sights on all your rifles, but two is one and one is none. You can do what this guy did, though: Bring lots of rifles 😀
