{"id":4310,"date":"2015-09-10T18:45:56","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T23:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gunscarstech.com\/?p=4310"},"modified":"2015-09-10T18:45:56","modified_gmt":"2015-09-10T23:45:56","slug":"kilted-to-kick-cancer-so-you-want-to-wear-a-kilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunscarstech.com\/?p=4310","title":{"rendered":"Kilted to Kick Cancer: So You Want to Wear a Kilt?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before I get into it, I want to remind people why I&#8217;m doing this.\u00a0 This month is Prostrate awareness month, and I&#8217;m participating in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiltedtokickcancer.org\/product\/ktkc-donation-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kilted to Kick Cancer<\/a>.\u00a0 Last year, we raised $13,000 for research, and want to beat that this year.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve got some extra cash, please follow that link and tell them that Team Oddball sent you.<\/p>\n<p>Wow&#8230; it&#8217;s almost the end of the week, and I forgot to post a picture (I blame Dragoncon), so&#8230; here you go!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4311\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gunscarstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_00421-e1441925978577.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4311\" src=\"https:\/\/gunscarstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_00421-e1441925978577-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Why yes, that is a gallon sized flask.\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Why yes, that is a gallon sized flask<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I figured this year I&#8217;d discuss the basics of wearing kilts.\u00a0 This being the first post, I might as well start off with the simple stuff and discuss the different types.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s basically 3 types, starting from newest to oldest:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The utility kilt:\u00a0 This is what I&#8217;m wearing above, made by one of the first companies to make them (Utilikilt).\u00a0 These are a new idea that basically didn&#8217;t exist until they and Alt.kilt came around in the early 2000&#8217;s.\u00a0 Now it seems like everyone&#8217;s making them.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure everyone reading this blog is familiar with 5.11&#8217;s attempt at making them.\u00a0 I&#8217;d also point to UTKilt as a good manufacturer for cheap ones.\u00a0 There are some companies that have made them in various tartans, but, for the most part, you&#8217;re looking at solid colors.\u00a0 The biggest benefit these have over the more traditional styles is pockets.<\/li>\n<li>The small kilt: This is what most folks think of when you say &#8220;kilt,&#8221; and has been standard for formal events\/uniforms\/etc for a couple hundred years now.\u00a0 These are almost always made using fabric with a tartan\/plaid pattern on it, but can be found with solid colors (or if some crazy person decides to make one out of <a href=\"https:\/\/gunscarstech.com\/2015\/09\/03\/its-that-time-of-year-again-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">hawaiian print<\/a> fabric).\u00a0 Traditionally, they&#8217;re made of wool, but you can get them made out of acrylic, rayon, and various other fabrics.\u00a0 While some companies do offer some with hidden pockets (notably, Sportkilt), if you&#8217;re wanting to carry anything, it&#8217;s going to have to be stuffed in your sporran (that pouch in the front), or other pouches hanging off your belt.\u00a0 Oh, and if you&#8217;re not hanging things off your belt, the belt is purely for decoration, and many kilts of this type don&#8217;t have belt loops.<\/li>\n<li>The great kilt: The great kilt is the oldest of the types.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically a large piece of fabric (typically wool) and a belt.\u00a0 The cloth is laid on the ground and pleated on top of the belt.\u00a0 The wearer then lays down on the cloth, wraps it around him, and then secures it with the belt.\u00a0 This garment serves multiple purposes as outerwear, a hooded cloak if needed, and a bed roll (a 60&#8243;
