  • I’ve seen that movie

Isn’t this how the Terminator movies all start off?

  • Movies!

    Bad news: Strep throat

Good news: 2 days of watching movies! Some short reviews

Colombiana: like any other film by Luc Besson. Think “The Professional” and “La Femme Nikita” with a latin flair.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes: pretty good. CGI was done very well and there was actually a pretty good storyline.

Planet of the Apes: The 1968 Charlton Heston version. I decided to finally watch it to maybe fill in some gaps in the prequel. Knowing how the movie ends was not helpful.

Scream 4: When will Sidney Prescott buy a freaking gun? Otherwise it was as good as a Scream movie can be. I like the franchise mostly because it makes fun of itself while scaring the crap out of you. Also its not torture porn.

  • Christmas Bounty

Alternate title: Why Amazon Wish Lists have made Christmas so much better.*

I didn’t get anything that made me say “Why the heck would you think I might use that?” Here are the highlights:

Belkin F8Z492-P Bluetooth Music Receiver: I haven’t listened to the radio in months…probably nearly a year. I download podcasts to my Nexus One and then plug in to auxiliary jack and listen to them on my commute. I wanted this little guy to help me with a little alternator whine problem I’ve been having and generally make my dashboard appearance less cluttered (There are currently cables for my phone’s power and the 1/8″ audio coming out of the top of my AC vents). My only disappointment with this device is entirely in the marketing photos. All the photos show a single wire coming off the device while it’s in operation, leading me to believe it is powered by a rechargeable battery. It is not. You have to have an external power supply, which I’m going to make. Stay tuned 😀

Fenix E21 Flashlight: This thing is awesome. I’ve never had a “tactical flashlight” that wasn’t attached to a weapon, so I didn’t know what I was missing. I got the AA model since, well, everything else I have uses AAs. That might have been a mistake since the 2AA model is significantly longer than the more expensive CR123A model. It’s brighter than my M6 that lives on my Glock. I used it last night and this morning while walking Casey and it is really, really bright.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated): I talked about the audio version a couple of weeks ago and how I needed to get the book for reference. Really glad I got this.

Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work: Someone, I can’t remember who, recommended this book to me recently. My life is almost entirely digital and I have this yearning to work with my hands. It’s almost a spiritual need for me but I haven’t really done much.

Atlas Shrugged: Part One [Blu-ray]: My liberal college professor aunt bought me this. I didn’t love the movie, but I threw it on my wish list anyway for the special features and to maybe get them to finish out the series.

The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy): I don’t care who you are, this movie was fun.

So how’d you guys make out?

*[Yes, I know Christmas is about celebrating Christ’s birth and spending time with family, but this isn’t a blog about that. As a teenager, I got really turned off by people “sneaking” proselytizing into my life and it probably delayed my acceptance of Him by a decade. If I’m going to blog about my faith here, it’ll probably be on Easter since that’s a much bigger deal to me.]

  • It’s like a rip in the space-time continuum

    My normal commute: ~55 minutes
My “school’s out” commute: ~40 minutes
My “There is precipitation on the ground, in the air, in the forecast, or it possibly looks like it might rain sometime this week” commute: ~1hr 15 minutes

Today I made it to the office in 26 minutes, and I stopped for breakfast on the way in.

  • Let me know how that works out for you

I know I’ve talked about this before, but since I can’t find a link I’ll mention it again. There is a neighborhood in Nashville called East Nashville, or just “East” to some people. East Nashville has been “up and coming” or “in the process of gentrification” for at least the last 15, probably 20 years. Young, white liberals moved into pockets of East Nashville surrounded by MDHA housing projects, section 8 housing, and halfway houses for felons and druggies. These things were already there, haven’t gone anywhere, and by the looks of things aren’t going anywhere any time soon. It’s quite easy to find a condo that last sold for $250,000 nestled between a four unit cinder block apartment and a crack house.

New residents and business owners in East Nashville are shocked, SHOCKED! to discover that these neighbors see them as income sources. New restaurants are frequently robbed. So are residents. Usually no one is hurt, but that’s not always the case.

So, what do these people do to combat crime in their area? Install alarms, surveillance cameras, and “No Guns Allowed” signs. You know, because criminals are deterred by signs. By and large they shrug violent crime off as a cost of living in the “right” zip code.

I try not to go to East Nashville because of the combination of high crime and victim disarmament policies. Pretty much every restaurant in the area is posted, but yet East Nashville still has the highest violent crime rate in the area. Unfortunately, my wife and I have several friends who live there so I can’t entirely avoid it.

  • Eff GoDaddy

Apparently they think SOPA is just great.

I’ve never used GoDaddy since I always felt they were a bit sleazy.

I switched all my domains to NameCheap.com earlier this year and they are awesome. They are so awesome, in fact, that if you use coupon code SOPASucks they’ll transfer your domain for $6.99.

Go do it. Now. GoDaddy is like the Bank of America or GM of domain registrars. Eff em.

  • This is my shocked face

Last year, Republican Speaker Beth Harwell told legislators not to bring up gun bills.

Looks like the leadership is doing it again this year.

Remind me why I spent so much effort getting a Republican majority in the TN House? I have forgotten.
