  • Update to the Basic Gunshot Wound Kit

A while back I put up a post on what’s needed for a basic gunshot wound kit. That post came about because of my strong belief that folks who shoot regularly need to have one of these in their range bag, as well as the training on how to use them. My kit includes the very basics and was could fit in a quart-sized ziplock bag.

One of the things in the kit is the Hyfin Chest Seal. The seals I bought expired in August So I ordered new ones.

    They’ve changed, slightly:

Old on top, new on bottom.
Old on top, new on bottom.

The new ones are a little larger than the old ones. The first thought I had was that I ordered a different size, but they have the same National Serial Number:

    NSN:6515-01-532-8019
    NSN:6515-01-532-8019

Now, I’m sure there is a really good reason for the size change. The guys who make these know a whole lot more about it than I do so I don’t want this to come across as a complaint. But it does present a problem for me:

The new seals don’t fit in a quart-sized ziplock bag.

Again, not a complaint, but I did want to put this FYI out there for anyone who built their kits using my post.

    Update to the update:

I contacted the manufacturer and asked them if folding/creasing the seals will damage them, and why they made them larger. The response I got was:

1 – The Chest can be folded and creased without adverse effect in performance or quality.
2- More surface area coverage was desired by our customers according to feedback that we have received.

So that settles that. Now go ponder what the implications of #2 are…

  • Blood in the streets!

What happens when you have record gun sales, record new handgun permits, and fewer restrictions on where folks can carry?

How about the lowest number of murders ever recorded in a single year?

  • Gun Porn: QD Scope and Outback II-D suppressor on the 10/22 Takedown Tactical

Last week I showed off my new toy and had a decision to make about mounting my optics. Regular readers know that I bought a BSA Sweet .22 mounted in a PEPR QD a while back for my M&P15-22, but it didn’t quite work out. I also have a Nikon P-223 3×32 BDC Carbine in some $20 QD rings*

    IMG_3693

What I decided to do was take the cheapo QD rings off the P-223 scope and put them on the Sweet .22. Then I bought some Burris XTR Rings for the P-223 on Farmdad’s recommendation. More on that later, as I’m playing musical gun parts with pretty much all my rifles right now.

So here’s what I ended up with:
    IMG_3696

And here’s what it looks like all broken down:
    IMG_3699

My next step is figuring out a way to put a bipod on it. I have this one, which came with a mounting plate for the rifle stock, but since apparently this stock is hollow I’m not sure how that’s all going to work out. This replacement barrel band gives me mixed feelings, and there’s a reviewer who says it doesn’t work with the takedown model.

One more thing of note: The threading on the 10/22 is a wee bit too long for the Gemtech Outback II-D…
    IMG_3695

Gemtech’s specs say that the internal threading on the Outback II-D is 0.400″ so I’ll need to use a spacer in order to avoid damaging the first baffle.

*despite what the description says, those are Weaver rings, not Picatinny.

  • Thought for the day

Last year, Wayne LaPierre held a press conference and declared, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” He was mercilessly mocked for proposing such a “crazy” idea.

The Bloombergs of the world dusted off their playbooks, set the faux outrage meter to 11, and ran to Colorado to pass some of the most sweeping gun control legislation that state had ever seen. They banned standard capacity magazines and private sales saying that would prevent these mass shootings.

    It didn’t.

Facts are still coming in, but it appears that the latest shooter used a low-capacity shotgun and bought it through a licensed FFL. Police say that he was “intended to injure many people” and had homemade Molotov Cocktails in addition to his firearm. He had a bandoleer full of shotgun shells and a machete, too.

But he only shot one person, and it was over 80 seconds later.

    Why?

Because there was a good guy with a gun on premises, and just like every other mass shooting the shooting stopped when the bad guy was confronted.

    This works. Every. Single. Time.

But, please: Let’s just continue to make it harder for people to defend themselves from nutjobs like this guy. For the children.

    Mine. Alllllll mine……

    Ruger 11140
    Ruger 11140

    IMG_3674

I picked it up this weekend from my friend Reese at The Nashville Gun Company. Not a fan of the Mossy Oak stock, but colors are about the least important feature of a tool.

Two cool things about this particular catalog item (11140, if you’re interested–and I think it’s a distributor exclusive to AcuSport) is that the bag it comes with is brown instead of black, and it came with a BX25 magazine instead of the standard 10 round rotary magazine.

    IMG_3673

Included: BX25, receiver lock, scope base, carry strap
Included: BX25, receiver lock, scope base, carry strap

When I was picking it up, I casually mentioned that I was going to need to pick up a scope base for it, and Reese informed me that it came with one from the factory. Since I was planning on using the PEPR and Sweet-22 combo I took off the M&P15-22 when I realized it wasn’t going to work out on that rifle, that was great news.

Unfortunately, as has been the case several times, things didn’t work out the way I planned:

Ruger scope base next to underside of PEPR mount
Ruger scope base next to underside of PEPR mount

As Oddball put it: “That’s frustratingly close.” So now I need to decide if I’m going to buy a picatinny base or another set of $20 QD rings.*

One thing about the rifle that kinda surprised me was that the barrel band is…plastic:
    IMG_3678

And the screw that clamps the barrel band is clearly much longer than it needs to be:
    IMG_3680

And of course the reason I bought this model was BECAUSE THREADED BARREL:
    IMG_3676

So I’ll need to take that off and get a thread protector. Also I need more magazines because the answer to “how many magazines do you need” is always “More.” I have two from my Tec-22 that will work but I’m going to need more than that.

*As it turns out, Ruger’s base is Weaver and the PEPR is Picatinny so it would’t fit anyway. Weaver rings will fit in a Picatinny base, but Picatinny rings won’t fit on a Weaver Rail.

  • Gives “Black Friday” a whole new meaning

    From IRC:

16:43 <+wizardpc> Things I learned today: .300blk subsonics won’t penetrate soft body armor
    16:43 <@daniels> really
16:44 <+wizardpc> but the body armor will deform about 4 inches into “whatever” is behind it
16:44 <+wizardpc> so, ribcage broken in many pieces
16:44 * oddball is glad he didn’t go black friday shopping with wizardpc.

This is where I learned that, by the way.

My friend James sent these to me, with this:

I decided to order one of the new MOE AK Grips from Magpul, just to try it out. Got it Friday, and put it on the AKSU. I like it, much more “grippy” than a traditional AK grip. It takes standard Magpul grip cores, so you can configure the storage as needed. I think I am going to pick up another one for the SLR-105.

He’s also got a Burris FastFire sitting on top of that. It’s a fun little gun.

  • Gun Porn: And now for something completely different…

We’re doing some remodeling, and I’m building some furniture, so…..nail gun!

  • IDPA does not train you for real life

You probably have run across this picture of the Kenya Mall Attack:

    Kenya Mall IDPA

Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably wondering why the hell those two guys on the left look like they’re running the Realest IDPA stage ever*.

Well, the reason is because they were at and IDPA match when all that started.

IDPA doesn’t train you for real life. That doesn’t mean IDPA shooters don’t shoot in real life.

  • Gun Porn: That’s not a revolver. THIS is a revolver

Same group as last week’s picture. This week we have Magnum Research’s Biggest, Finest Revolver in .45-70.

The owner said the barrel is aftermarket. He let me shoot it a few times and it’s….FANTASTIC! I hit a steel popper at 200 yards on like the second or third round.
