  • Bleg: Weapon Lights

My home defense AR doesn’t have a light on it. This seems like a deficiency.

I have a Magpul AFG2 (in black, which apparently is no longer sold on Amazon) so I’d like something that I can mount on the right side that has a remote pressure switch.

I’m open to non name-brand stuff as long as it’s 1) not going to disintegrate after a few range sessions and 2) throws a good amount of quality light. Based on my experiences with the Fenix lights I’ve bought I think I can get this done for less than $100

I’d even be open to “Hey get this mount, this flashlight, and you can buy a remote pressure switch for it over here.”

So, who’s got an inexpensive light setup they really enjoy?

  • Because I llike to share…

Erin has something that is probably not safe for your sanity.

  • Review: 5.11 Covert Khaki vs Covert Khaki 2.0

A few years ago I bought a couple pair of 5.11 Tactical’s Covert Khakis. I really liked them, to the point where I wore each pair twice a week for almost two years. Just recently I lost a button on one of them, about 5 years after I bought them. Mrs wizardpc kindly repaired that last night.

So, really durable, then. Virtually no signs of wear.

My only complaint is that they shrank about a half inch in inseam the first time I ran them through the dryer on high heat. Learned my lesson on that one. So they’ve been a little highwater-ish.

A couple of years ago, 5.11 discontinued the Covert Khakis. By the time I heard about it, my size was sold out everywhere. It made me sad.

When I was writing the post on the Columbia ROC pants I discovered that 5.11 had come out with a Covert Khaki 2.0. I was thrilled! I ordered a pair a size larger than last time to hopefully prevent the shrinking issue. That ended up being a mistake, for reasons I’ll explain in a minute.

  • Two more looking to join the club

Looks like Erin has managed to get through the carry class along with her mom.  Of course, by get through the class, I mean they came home with the same number of holes they left with and managed not to fall asleep at any point.

Along with that, apparently her mom picked up a nice knew piece, and, ironically enough, what fit her the best was one of those .357 snub-nosed jobs that we all say “no, this isn’t a beginner’s gun!”

  • BAG purchase report

So… I finally bought that .22 pistol that I’ve been talking about needing to do for a while on the way back from the scifi con yesterday.  After considerable research and lots of thought between the Beretta NEOS and Ruger MkIII, I went with neither.

    Instead, I picked up this:

A Browning Buck Mark with a 5.5″ slab side bull barrel and the upgraded grips.  I went with it because most folks seem to consider it on par with the Ruger, and, from what I could find, I could get this for about $100 less than a comparable Ruger.  It came with a hard case, one magazine, one of those stupid cable locks that will never see any use from me, and enough safety and warning booklets to kill 3 trees.

I didn’t get back in quite enough time to try it out at the range, but I will say the rubber grips (their “Ultragrip RX” grips) definitely matches my hand wonderfully.  As I’ve commented before, I wish there were larger caliber pistols that had grips like this instead of just adding a bunch of stippling and calling it a day.

  • To-done list

    Up at 0430. On purpose.

    Ran a 5k. Mostly.

Went to the gun show. Surprisingly few guns. The only thing I came home with was for the dog.

Moved blog from a self hosted solution to a hosting provider. I was already paying for the space and didn’t want to have downtime again.

    Dinner with the wife’s family.

Possibly found her a new vehicle.

Played with the dog until she decided to start tearing up the house.

    Feeding lilwizard before bed.

    Not a bad Saturday.

  • Fricken Laser Beams!

A bit back, my friends at the Hacker Consortium got themselves a laser engraver/cutter similar to this one.

So I did what any rational person would do. I took several magazines to get the GCT Logo engraved on them!

I did one M&P15-22 mag, a Glock Fun Stick, and a seriously used aluminium AR mag. Results were kind of “meh” because my expectations were high. Still pretty cool, though!

  • Basic Gunshot Wound Kit

Alternate title: Roll your own IFAK

Back in February, oddball and I took a “First Aid for Gun Toters” class put on by our local Zombie Squad chapter. It was, in my uneducated opinion, a pretty good class. My one complaint was that the guy wasn’t selling any of the products he was pimping. 😀

I hopped on Amazon a couple of weeks later and bought pretty much the minimum equipment required for a good gunshot wound kit. Actually, I bought two of each so I could keep one in my car and one in the wife’s car.

The C-A-T Combat Application Tourniquet is a small tourniquet that is currently issued as individual equipment to our infantrymen. It’s easy to use and has a locking mechanism in place so that you can self-apply it.

QuikClot Combat Gauze is basically your standard gauze, only it’s infused with QuikClot. The way you’re supposed to use this, and any other gauze in a gunshot wound, is to take your finger and stuff the wound. This has the new formulation of QuikClot that doesn’t produce heat. The original formulation would actually cause serious burns in the wound, so make sure you don’t get old stuff.

The HyFin Chest Seal is used for the infamous “sucking chest wound.” The instructor told us that we could just use something like this instead, but I opted for the purpose-built (and significantly more expensive) option. UPDATE 1/5/2014: See this post for an important update about the Hyfin Chest Seal.

The famous Israeli Bandage, which I now understand how to use thanks to the class. Here’s where I have to give a shout-out to Acme Approved, the vendor that actually supplied the bandages. One of the two I originally received had a small hole in the package, rendering it non-sterile and unusable. I sent them an email, and they sent me TWO replacements! Now I have an extra that I keep in my laptop bag.

I wanted to get everything together before buying a bag, and it turns out that they fit perfectly in a quart-sized Zip-Lock bag:

That’s it. Those are the basics. I keep my kit in between the door sill and the driver’s seat in my Jeep, and the one in my wife’s car is just in her glove box. All medical equipment has an expiration date, so take note of what expires first in your kit. For me, the chest seals expire in about 18 months so I have set a reminder to buy more around that time. Prices on these items seem to fluctuate, so be sure to shop around.

I gotta tell ya, having the equipment and the knowledge to treat a GSW certainly makes me feel better.
