Ineffective Signage

By | July 29, 2012

So a guy open carried into a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Cookeville this weekend. This caused a theater employee to call police, since the theater is posted “no guns allowed.”

The cops show up and try to find the guy amongst the other guests, but can’t. The decision was made to stop the movie and ask to speak with the gentleman with the gun.

Three guys stand up.

No arrests, because all three had permits and our statute requires the posting to be “prominent.” Police decided the theater’s sign did not meet that criteria.

Betcha they have a bigger sign now.

My state. South Carolina states measurements that the sign has to be and what it has to say. I haven’t seen one sign that is legal so i carry anyway.

The story says the cops made the guys leave their guns in their cars for the remainder of the movie?!?! Great job movie theater. I would assume that only honest citizens would have willingly stood up an told police they had a gun. A criminal would have just waited for the cops to leave.

If you can’t be arrested for violating such a sign, ignore them. If they notice, they can ask you to leave, which you should. Next time conceal it better.

Lucky me–I’m in NC where not only can they post, but you aren’t allowed to carry into anywhere that admission is charged.

Oddly enough, I’ve developed a marked tendency not to go places admission is charged.

Alabama does not require you to tell a law officer that you are carrying a gun. I would have just kept my seat.
