Gun Porn: FINALLY!! Edition

By | January 29, 2014

Over the holidays I sold the FDE Magpul Fanboy AR I built last year. The plan was to take the money from that sale and put it towards an AAC MPW 9″ AR factory SBR. Look at the parts on that puppy and tell me it’s not worth it. It’s a great rifle at a great price.

But then…

Talking about my plans with several people, I decided to go in a different direction:

That’s a .308 Remington 700 AAC-SD. I’ve basically been talking about getting a 700 in 308 since Clinton was President, and since I have a .30 caliber suppressor I’ve been eyeing this one for a while.

Mmmmm.....Factory Threaded Barrel

Mmmmm…..Factory Threaded Barrel

When these first came out, they came from the factory with an AAC Blackout flash hider/suppressor adapter. I don’t think they’ve come like that for a while, but I didn’t really notice it until a few weeks ago.

Astute readers may remember that my friend James has an older version of this rifle and that I was disappointed in the trigger. I’m not sure if his has this, but the newer ones have an adjustable trigger from the factory.

That hex screw adjusts the trigger weight.

It’s going to be a little while before I actually get this out to a range. I’ve already ordered the YHM Brake that fits my suppressor, a cheek rest, and this soft case/shooting mat combo, but I still need a scope mount, good rings, and a decent scope. I’ve set about a $600 budget for all of those things and may decide that I need a gunsmith to install the mount because it may require bedding.

I’m looking forward to getting it all set up. This is a new discipline for me, Appleseed notwithstanding.

Mine does have the adjustable trigger, I just haven’t gotten around to adjusting it yet. Come springtime I plan to spend a day at GGC with mine, and finalize the setup.

If you think you were disappointed in the trigger on the older model, then the trigger on this model will depress you! I could not get rid of this gun fast enough! The so called adjustable trigger on these rifles is supposed to from 3 to 5 pounds. Mine shipped in from the factory at 5lbs. After adjusting the screw out as far as was allowable it went down to 4.2lbs. The screw left a very uncomfortable bump on the trigger that you have to put your finger over to shoot. After finally getting to talk to someone at Remington I was told that since I turned the adjustment screw the warranty was now void. When I asked the rep then why sell the gun with an adjustable trigger he basically ignored the question and said all they could do was have me ship it back to them and for the princely sum of $220 they would install a new trigger. Decided to take it to my gunsmith and discovered the entire trigger assembley was covered in some type of glue. After a LOT of work he finally got it off and took the trigger down to 3.5lbs. That was when I discovered the stock was so rubbery that it touched the barrel making it non free floating. To top it all off the bolt was so rough it felt like there was sand in the action, all this … from the factory.
Needless to say, I will keep my older model Remington 700P for life, that 700 is the sweetest gun I own. Apologies for the negative words, but it is the truth. Good luck with yours.

I don’t think anyone would be surprised that the $1200 700P has a better stock and trigger than the $600 700 AAC.

It is surprising that using the heavily marketed externally adjustable trigger would void the warranty. I’ve got an email out to Remington about that because it just doesn’t sound right.

    Hi wizard

It may not sound right, but it is. I purchased the gun myself and went through the whole ordeal myself and my comment was word for word how it unfolded with it. It is not a story that I’m retelling, it is a real life experience. I didn’t think it would have a better stock or trigger than my P, but it should at least be what is advertised. When I tried to talk to the Rem. rep about the trigger warranty issue he just said again, we can replace it for $220. I will stand behind what I say, the rifle is crap. I found out later that the glue on the trigger pack has to do with the NBC program about the 700’s going off without reason and Remingtons answer was that the triggers on those guns had been altered and the glue was to prevent that. That info came from an email inquiry from my gunsmith. And in my opinion on a $600 rifle the stock should not touch the barrel. I would suggest you buy one yourself and get back to me. If you would like a email to contact me let me know here.

oops, I see you did buy one I didn’t make it to the bottom of the article, when I see one of these after the one I had it kind of irritates me…. good luck with it, I wish I’d known you wanted one I’d have made you a great deal on mine! Again apologies for the negatives but its the truth, I like your sight by the way.

Good luck to you JCook, I hope yours and wizardpc’s work great. I’ve been kind of holding out hope that mine was a lemon, but not holding my breath on it. When you adjust yours, be prepared to void your warranty. What really disgusted me the most was talking to the Remington rep. Once I asked about the adjustable trigger he couldn’t get me off the phone fast enough, I think the whole trigger thing is coming from the NBC show about 700’s discharging without warning. I’ve owned a 700p for many years without any problems, nor do I know anyone having that problem and NBC has been known to produce shows full of bullpucky before so…..
