An experiment in applied Chemistry

By | March 1, 2012

So a week ago, I ordered a MrBeer, and it greeted me at my front door when I came home today.

So, I’ve gone through the motions, thrown the concoction into the closet, and I’ll see how it tuns out in 2 weeks.

Good luck! Just discovered Sierra Nevada Pale Ale recently. Try it and contrast/compare.

Here in a few weeks I’ll be brewing an all grain batch at my house. Ill make sure to send you an invite to hang and have a homebrew.

I hate to tell you, but homebrewers generally regard Mr Beer the way shooters regard Hi Point pistols.

There is plenty of good info on the web on brewing for newbies and the equipment isn’t hard to find or overly expensive.

I hope your first batch turns out well. If it does, great! If it doesn’t, don’t give up on the idea, but upgrade your equipment a bit.

@Robb: Yeah, I know. I bought this off of w00t for $25 including shipping. I’m using this to kind of dip my toes in the water. The girlfriend has already told me that using the cans is cheating, and she’s right. My next batch will probably be the proper way. I figure, at that price point, it’s essentially a disposable item if I don’t like it/decide it’s crap.

And no, I haven’t told my local buddies that homebrew that I’ve bought it yet. I know they will shame me.

You might want to give it 3 weeks, depending?. Then bottle and keep in closet for another month, then a week in the fridge. Green beer just ain’t right in flavor.

Wow… that’s a hell of a lot longer than the directions state. They say a week is good, but waiting up to 2 weeks is best, then bottle for a couple days. They also seem to state that they expect it to start going skunky after a month after bottling.

Don’t let the “using the cans is cheating” thing get to you too much. It’s quite traditional to get a number of extract batches under your belt before you go all grain. Once you outgrow the Mr. Beer I’d certainly do a couple of 5 gallon kits before jumping into the deep end.

I started off with a Mr. Beer kit a year ago and quickly went to 5 gallon all grain batches. It is good for getting your feet wet. I still use the Mr. Beer fermenter for small test batches like SMaSH’s.
You’ll get impatient and want to drink the beer early. Definitely wait 2 weeks before bottling and another 2 weeks before drinking your beer. It will not be properly carbonated after a couple of days in the bottle. It will not go skunky after a month. You should be able to keep it just fine up to 6 months or more. But those 8 quart bottles of beer will not last that long.:)
